Business Safety Week 2016
This week, Essex County Fire and Rescue Service (ECFRS) will be engaging with businesses in Essex to help them make sure they are as fire safe as possible.
Working with businesses is a core part of the work ECFRS does to make Essex safer. Every year, ECFRS fire officers and firefighters visit more than 8000 businesses in Essex to help them be more fire safe.
The number of fires in public and commercial buildings has fallen since the introduction of changes in fire safety law, however despite the overall trend in reduction ECFRS still attend 700 fires in non-domestic premises every year – that’s an average of two fires a day.
Business Safety Week, September 5-11, has been scheduled to run at a time when many businesses are preparing for the busy winter shopping period leading up to Christmas. These new recruits may not have the same level of fire safety awareness as permanent members of staff, and may not be aware of the steps needed to protect themselves, their customers and colleagues.
Fire can cause major disruption for businesses – there is a far greater chance of recovery if risks have been identified, and appropriate arrangements have been put in place to prevent fires starting, or to mitigate their impact.
Head of Safer Communities Julian Ashley said:
“Our officers and firefighters work with businesses all year round supporting them in complying with the latest fire safety legislation and helping them to make sure that their customers and employees are as safe as possible.
“This week provides a special focus for business fire safety and we are urging all businesses in Essex to think about fire safety as they prepare for the busy winter shopping period.
“Our officers are ready to help any business in Essex that needs our support. We have a team of highly trained and experienced officers who are here to engage with businesses and give them advice and guidance about how they can keep their businesses, customers and staff as fire safe as possible.”
