Pony rescued from ditch

Colchester Road, Thorpe-le-Soken
21/10/2020 @ 08:38
Incident Number: 133062
In attendance: 1 x Weeley, Animal Rescue Unit (Chelmsford), Swift Water Rescue (Urban Search and Rescue/Lexden)

Firefighters rescued a pony which was trapped in a ditch at an equestrian centre.

On-call firefighters from Weeley attended, led by Crew Manager Mark Kilbey whose full-time job is an equestrian stud manager.

He used his expertise to keep the retired schooling pony calm and reassure the owner until the Animal Rescue Unit and Swift Water Rescue team, requested due to the high water level in the ditch, arrived.

They used specialist equipment to lift the pony to safety at 10.05am and left it in the care of the owner and a vet.

Could you be an on-call firefighter?

Weeley's firefighters who attended this incident are on-call firefighters - people who live or work within 5 minutes of an on-call fire station and are paid to protect their local community.

It's a great way to use your skills and experience, like Crew Manager Mark Kilbey was able to do in this incident.
