Firefighters were called to a house fire in Boreham this afternoon after neighbours heard smoke alarms going off.
On arrival, crews reported that there was a fire in the kitchen and worked to extinguish it by 3.16pm.
The cause of the fire was accidental after the hob was left on while the residents were out.
The residents have been rendered homeless after the kitchen suffered fire damage and the rest of the house was badly smoke damaged.
Watch Manager Nick Singleton from Chelmsford Fire Station said: “This incident highlights the importance of having working smoke alarms in your house and if the neighbours hadn’t have heard the smoke alarms going off, the damage could have been much worse.
“We’d like to advise residents to always make sure their hob is turned off when leaving the house.”
