Crews were called to a house in Goldings Crescent, Vange, after reports of a fire in the kitchen.
On arrival firefighters reported that the kitchen was heavily smoke logged and a slow cooker, which had been placed on top of a hob, was alight.
Firefighters quickly extinguished the fire and cleared the property of smoke by 10.30am.
Watch Manager Midwood, Basildon Fire Station, said:
"The resident had placed her slow cooker on top of a hob, which had inadvertently been switched on.
"Thankfully the family was alerted to the fire by their smoke alarm, but their exit was not as safe or quick as it could have been as they panicked and walked through the smoke logged kitchen to escape.
"This raises two safety messages for us. Firstly, never place any items on top of your hob as it could be accidently switched on.
"It's also really important to plan your escape route from your property so you are prepared in the event of an emergency."
The kitchen has suffered some smoke damage and the cooker is completely destroyed.
