Firefighters were called to a fire in a high-rise building this morning after a neighbour heard a smoke alarm within a fourth floor flat.

On arrival, crews confirmed the fire had started in the kitchen and worked incredibly efficiently to extinguish the fire by 10.48am, ensuring it did not spread beyond the kitchen in the process.

Station Manager Justin Benson-Ryal said: "This incident could easily have been much more serious if it wasn't for the neighbour's quick thinking to call 999, and of course the professionalism of our crews, who have responded with the utmost professionalism.

"The fact that the neighbour was alerted by the sound of a smoke alarm once again demonstrates the importance of having them fitted in your home - they really can make all the difference."

The cause of the fire has been recorded as accidental after an oven was left on unattended, igniting nearby kitchen items.
