Crews have worked throughout the night to tackle a large fire at a scaffolding yard.
One crew from Basildon was originally called to a bush on fire next to an industrial yard last night (Thursday 2 May).
While the crew were making their way to the incident 11 further calls were received.
Watch Manager Rob Fossett, Basildon Fire Station, said:
"When we arrived at what we thought was a small bush fire we could immediately see that the incident was far bigger than we'd expected and requested support from further crews.
"There was a well developed fire in a large scaffolding yard, which measured around 20m x 20m.
"Our main priority was to gain control of the fire to stop it spreading.
"Without the hard work and exceptional skills of our firefighters the fire could well have spread to neighbouring buildings and across the road.
"The professionalism and effectiveness our firefighters demonstrated last night was first class."
By 10pm firefighters had already reported that they were making good progress and by 3am crews had extinguished the main fire and were dampening down hotspots to ensure the area was safe.
Watch Manager Fossett added:
"Thanks to the quick actions of our crew the damage the yard suffered has mainly been limited to the materials that were on initially on fire."
An investigation into the cause of the fire will take place today.
