Firefighters were called to a fire involving a car and a house in Black Notley, Braintree this afternoon.

A passer-by called the fire service after seeing a car alight next to a house. When crews arrived they reported that the car and house was on fire.

The intial fire crews requested extra resources to assist at the scene - a total of five fire engines - which included a fire engine from Leigh - which was driving through Braintree returning from a training exercise.

Update 5:55pm - The fire has been extinguished. The garage, car and house roof have been damaged, but firefighters managed to stop the fire spreading to the rest of the property.

The cause of the fire was found to be accidental. The car, which had not been used for some time, was started and a fault caused the fire. The fire then quickly spread to the garage and to the roof of the property. There was no reported injuries.

Incident Commander Simon Dedman said:
"The firefighters first on scene worked very quickly to control the fire. They immediately went into the house and thanks to the speed of their actions, managed to stop the fire spreading and damaging the rest of the property and the contents.

"The car has been destroyed and the garage has been badly fire damaged. Part of the roof has been damaged, but the rest of the house has been saved."
