Firefighters were called to a fire involving the roof spaces of a number of homes in Waltham Abbey.

The Incident Commander reported that four properties, spanning an area of around 50 metres by 20 metres, have been affected.

The road was closed and a cordon was set up with the support of Essex Police, while firefighters remained at the scene.

Due to the amount of smoke being created by the fire, the nearby school – Leverton Primary School – was temporarily closed.

The school was not affected by the fire. Pupils at the school were kept inside temporarily to avoid potential smoke inhalation.

The Incident Commander also liaised with utility services to isolate supplies to the homes affected.

At 2pm, the incident commander reported that the roof spaces of two semi-detached properties were completely alight. Firefighters used an Aerial Ladder Platform to allow them to tackle the fire from height.

At 3pm, pupils from the school were moved to the nearby Marriott Hotel to allow parents to safely collect them away from the scene of the fire.

At 3.45pm, the incident was being scaled down. The Incident Commander advised that four semi-detached homes were affected by the fire in total. Firefighters are currently extinguishing hotspots within the properties.

At 5.15pm, the fire was well under control and  the cordon has been reduced. The area affected by fire was cordoned off overnight before a fire investigation could take place on Friday morning.

At 8pm, the fire was out. An investigation will take place on Friday to determine the cause of the fire.
