16/03/2018 @ 20:24
Incident Number: 73920
In attendance: 2 x Southend
Crews were called to a house after the occupant smelled smoke and discovered a fire in a bedroom.
On arrival firefighters reported that three people had escaped from the house and two of them were suffering from burns and smoke inhalation.
Firefighters reported that a first floor bedroom was alight and worked to extinguish the fire by 9.30pm. The casualties were left in the care of the Ambulance Service.
The fire has been recorded as accidental.
Watch Manager Steve Kirkham said:
"The house had no smoke alarms fitted, meaning there was a delay in the fire being discovered, and ultimately, the fire service being called out to tackle the incident.
"When the occupants discovered the fire two of them also attempted to extinguish the fire themselves, resulting in them both suffering from burns.
"Incidents like this show how vital it is that every house has a working smoke alarm on every level. And don't forget, if there is a fire inside your home – get out, stay out and call 999."
