A family have been left homeless after a fire left their home badly damaged in Basildon this evening.
The family were alerted to the fire when their electricity went out, and when they went to investiagte they could see flames coming from the cupboard which has the fuse box.
The family immediately left their house and called 999.
When fire crews arrived they were faced with a developed fire which was being fuelled by gas which was leaking from a damaged gas pipe.
Fire crews requested the gas and electricity board to attend to isolate the gas and electricity supply. The two house either side of the affected house were also evacuated for their safety.
Watch Manager Howard Midwood, Basildon Fire Station, said:
"This was an extremely difficult fire to tackled because the gas and electrics were involved. The gas was fuelling the fire so it was our priority to get the supply isolated as soon as possible.
"Firefighters worked quickly to extinguish the fire and prevent it from spreading to the adjoining properties."
The fire was extinguished by 7:40pm. The house is severely damaged and is no longer habitable. The Red Cross team came to the scene to help support the family.
