In attendance: 1 x Newport, 2 x Saffron Walden, 1 x Stansted, 1 x Great Dunmow, 1 x Thaxted, 1 x Harlow (ALP)

Firefighters were called to a house fire in High Street, Newport early this morning (Sunday 31 December).

When firefighters arrived they reported the detatched two storey Tudor building was completely filled with smoke and the fire was spreading through the ground floor and roof area.

Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus entered the property to check no one was inside.

The officer in charge withdrew the firefighters from inside the building as the structure of the property became unstable. They requested the attendance of an aerial ladder platform (ALP) to help get more water onto the roof of the property.

*Update 8:20am* The fire is out. The incident has been scaled down to just four fire engines and the ALP needed at the incident. Firefighters willl continue to make sure the hot spots are extiguished and cooled. The incident will be scaled down again shortly to just two fire engines. The High Street is closed.while our crews and the fire engines remai at the scene.

Firefighters left the scene of the incident at 3pm.

An investigation will be carried out to establish the cause of the fire.
