Crews were called to a fire in a flat this afternoon.

On arrival firefighters reported that there was a large fire in the kitchen and worked to extinguish it by 3.45pm.

The fire had been caused after a chip pan caught alight.

The homeowner suffered burns to his face, arms and hands after trying to extinguish the fire with water, and was left in the care of the Ambulance Service.

The kitchen has been completely destroyed by fire and the house is now inhabitable.

Crew Manager Ricky Jones said:

"This is the third incident of this nature that we've seen in Essex over the last two days.

"It's so important that people are careful when cooking with oil and follow our safety tips.

"If the oil does catch alight you should never attempt to extinguish it with water as it can have tragic consequences.

"If there's a fire in your home follow our advice and get out, stay out and call 999."

ECFRS issues a press release earlier today with advice on how to stay safe in the kitchen.
