Three people safely evacuated a fire in their home in the early hours of this morning after being alerted by a smoke alarm.

The battery-powered smoke alarm sounded after a fire broke out within a bedroom on the property's first floor - allowing occupants to escape the property before it became more serious.

When crews arrived, they reported the bedroom was completely on fire. Firefighters were able to extinguish the fire by 2:20am.

The bedroom has been completely destroyed and the home has been left uninhabitable due to severe smoke damage.

One of the occupants has been taken to hospital after suffering from smoke inhalation.

The cause of the fire is believed to be smoking-related and has been recorded as accidental.
