Firefighters were called to the scene of a fire within a shop this evening.
On arrival, fire crews reported that the shop's stock room was completely smoke logged and a small fire was burning.
Firefighters extinguished the fire by 8.18pm, before clearing smoke using Positive Pressure Ventilation (PPV) fans.
The shop had been evacuated by shopping centre security personnel upon the fire alarm sounding, while a member of staff used a fire extinguisher effectively to ensure the fire was kept under control until fire crews arrived.
Geoff Wheal, Watch Manager at Corringham Fire Station, said: "On behalf of our firefighters I'd like to thank the team member who managed to control the fire so well before we reached the scene.
"Her quick-thinking and assured response to what could have been a very serious situation helped ensure that when we got to the shop, the fire hadn't spread anywhere close to the size it could have otherwise.
"The employee should not only be commended for her bravery but it was clear that she had had been given good fire safety training - to the business's credit."
Minor smoke damage has been suffered throughout the shop's premises and an investigation into the cause of the fire is ongoing.
