Incident Number: 65404
In attendance: 1 x Manningtree, 1 x Colchester

Two people in Mistley were alerted to a fire in their home last night thanks to their working smoke alarms.

On hearing the smoke alarm, the occupants made their way out of their home which was quickly filling with smoke.

When fire crews arrived they found the fire was in the utility room next to the kitchen. Firefighters managed to quickly extinguish the fire and stop it spreading to the rest of the house.

The utility room has been damaged by fire and the rest of the house has some smoke damage.

Sub Officer Ryan Ainger said:

"Incidents like this show how important it is to have working smoke alarms in your home. These occupants were alerted by their smoke alarm and so had time to get out. They did suffer some smoke inhalation and were cared for by the Ambulance Service, but without a smoke alarm it could have been a lot worse.

"We want all homes in Essex to have the excellent protection of working smoke alarms. Which is why we will visit your home and fit smoke alarms completely FREE of charge. Just call us on: 0300 303 0088 or book online: www.essex-fire.gov.uk/book"
