Firefighters have been called to a fire in a large derelict building which has spread to a neighbouring supermarket.
*Update 6pm* - The derelict building, which measures approximately 20m x 20m, has collapsed. The fire is affecting the rear of the neighbouring supermarket, which measures approximately 60m x 60m. The officer in charge reports that the fire is under control. The supermarket has been fully evacuated so crews can deal with the incident safely.
*Update 6:30pm* - The fire is surrounded. Firefighters are using multiple hoses and a hose from an aerial ladder platform to extinguish the fire as quickly as possible and to stop it spreading.
*Update 7:30pm* - The fire is now out. The incident has been scaled down, two fire engines will remain on site dampening down remaining hotspots.
The derelict building has been completely destroyed by the fire. The supermarket's storage area at the back of the building has been damaged, but firefighters managed to stop it spreading to the main store.
Firefighters left the scene at 1am.
Assistant Divisional Officer Martyn Hare, said:
"Firefighters did an excellent job stopping the fire spreading to rest of the supermarket building. We were also helped by the store's sprinklers which once activated, helped to extinguish the fire in the area at the back of the shop. Without a doubt, the sprinklers helped to stop the fire spreading and affecting the whole store."
*Update 1pm* The investigation to find the cause of the fire is still on-going.
