Firefighters were called to a house fire this morning after the occupants were alerted by a smoke alarm.
On arrival, fire crews reported that the ground floor of a mid-terraced property was completely alight and the entire first floor was smoke logged.
Firefighters worked hard to ensure the fire did not spread to any neighbouring homes and were able to extinguish it completely by 4.38am.
Mark Elliott, Watch Manager at Grays Fire Station, said: “I want to thank both the police and members of the public for making our jobs so much easier this morning.
“One neighbour managed to use a ladder to rescue both occupants from the first floor – a brave, quick-thinking act which not only removed both people from a potentially life-threatening situation, but meant that our crews could tackle the fire without the concern of anyone being at risk.”
Unfortunately, the home has been left uninhabitable.
Two casualties were left in the care of the Ambulance Service. An investigation into the cause of the fire will now go ahead.
