Firefighters were called to a bungalow fire in Braintree this afternoon (Wednesday 5 July).
When fire crews arrived at the address they reported the fire was affecting the roof space of a semi-detached bungalow.
The fire, which was contained to the roof space, was under control by 3pm.
Firefighters worked to dampen down the remaining hot spots, and fully extinguished the fire by 3:45pm.
Steve Wintrip, Station Officer at Braintree Fire Station, said:
"We were alerted to the fire by neighbours who had spotted smoke coming from the roof of the bungalow. When we arrived we found the fire was confinded to the roof space of one bungalow, but the smoke was starting to affect the semi-deteched bungalow next door.
"We immediately starting to fight the fire. Four firefighters entered the property to fight the fire from inside, and we also had firefighters with hoses tackling the fire from outside.
"The firefighters worked extremely hard and thankfully managed to stop the fire spreading to the neighbour's property.
"As well as fighting the fire, fire crews also went into the bungalows to bring out as many belongings as we could to stop them getting damaged.
"Unfortunately the bungalow where the fire started has suffered bad damage to the roof and the oocupants will not be able to stay there, but the damage to the neighbours property is minimal. The Red Cross Support team came to the incident to support the occupants with their immediate welfare needs.
"The cause of the fire is accidental. The occupants were having some building work done to the roof which is where we have identified the fire started".
