Kitchen fire - family woken by smoke alarm

Firefighters were called to a fire in a kitchen in London Road, Benfleet.

The occupants were woken up by their working smoke alarm and managed to get out of the house and call 999.

When firefighters arrived they reported the whole kitchen was completely on fire and the rest of the property was full of smoke.

Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus entered the property and managed to quickly extinguish the fire by 4:10am.

The house has suffered extensive damage.

The cause of the fire was the tumble dryer which had been put on overnight.
