Flat fire - family rescued

Firefighters rescued three people afer a fire broke out in a flat in Westcliff this evening (Monday 17 April).

When firefighters arrived at the property they reported the first floor flat was 100% alight and a family of three in the flat above were still inside.

Station Officer Barrie May, said:

"The family who were trapped in their flat were kept calm over the phone by our control operators, who gave them constant reassurance that we were working as quickly as possible to reach them. 

"As soon as we arrived, six firefighters entered the flat wearing breathing apparatus to rescue two adults and a child. 

"Both our control operators and our firefighters did a fantastic job in ensuring the family were kept informed, reassured and safe."

Crews extinguished the fire by 8:40pm.

The flat that the fire stated in is 100% fire damaged and the flat above suffered smoke damage. 

An investigation into the cause of the fire will take place tomorrow.
