Firefighters are tackling a fire in the thatched roof of a house in Great Sampford. On arrival the incident commander reported that the roof was 10% alight. Crews were using one hose reel jet to fight the fire.
At 20:15hrs the incident commander reported that the fire had now spread to engulf around 30% of the roof. Firefighters in breathing apparatus were using tools to strip away the roof and hose reel jets to fight the fire. A salvage operation - in which firefighters recover belongings and furniture from the house before it is damaged - was also taking place.
The electricity board has been called in and it is likely safety concerns mean they will have to shut power off to the entire street while the fire is being fought.
Update 21:20hrs: Salvage and firefighting operations are continuing as crews battle the blaze.
Update 22:30hrs: Firefighting and salvage operations are continuing. Crews are using three hose reel jets to fight the fire. A four pump relief is set to take over at the scene shortly.
Update: The fire was extinguished by 23:18hrs. Crews used two main jets, three hose reel jets, ladders and breathing apparatus to tackle the fire.
Firefighters remained at the scene for some time cutting away and dampening down to ensure no hot-spots remained.
A re-visit took place at 07:00hrs Tuesday morning and crews reported that all at the scene was cool.
