Volunteer Roles

Community Support Volunteers
Community Support Volunteers (CSV) work with officers, firefighters and staff to support the Safer Communities department. They assist and represent the Service at public events, provide home fire safety information to the public, attend and facilitate safety events and assist with After Incident Response exercises. CSVs also assist the RTC Reduction department with a variety of events, often in partnership with other emergency service organisations. A varied role that is perfect for confident communicators who enjoy meeting new people.

Home Safety Volunteers
Home Safety Volunteers work alongside our Home Safety Technicians, carrying out home safety visits to members of the public. They also participate in local safety promotion events and activities to promote and generate the visits. This role is often combined with the Community Support Volunteer role.

Parish Safety Volunteers
This unique project hopes to build community resilience at a very local level.  Jointly trained by Essex Police and Essex County Fire and Rescue Service, volunteers work at a very local level to complete home safety visits from both a fire and crime reduction point of view.  Volunteers who undertake this role are required to undergo Essex Police vetting, and additional training to maintain their skills and ability to signpost to other services.

Volunteer Scheme Assistants
Volunteer Scheme Assistants provide support with a range of tasks to help the Essex County Fire & Rescue Service volunteer scheme.  Duties include co-ordinating volunteer activity, updating spreadsheets, making telephone calls, printing and photocopying. A great role if you’re looking to brush up on your administration and general office skills.

Visitor Support Assistants welcome visitors to the museum, provide orientation information, offer support and advice to visitors regarding the layout of the museum, recommendations for what to see and answer visitor questions.

Essex Fire Museum – Collections Conservator
Collections Conservators assist in the care and presentation of the Essex Fire Museum Collection to ensure the continual high standard of care. They assist the Museum Officer in the environmental monitoring of the collection, museum and store, carry out cleaning to maintain the highest standards for our visitors in terms of cleanliness and tidiness and assist the development of outreach and handling collection.

Children and Young People – Crucial Crew Team
Be part of the crucial crew who deliver fantastic educational presentations to school children in Essex.  Interactive presentations include the brilliant “Driving with Grace” and home safety app games.  This hugely rewarding opportunity requires commitment and an enjoyment of public speaking.
