New Smoke Alarm Regulations

The Smoke Alarm and Carbon Monoxide Alarm (England)  Regulations 2015, came into effect on October 1, 2015. This new regulation requires landlords  to ensure the fire safety of their tenants as well as offer protection against carbon monoxide poisoning. Failure to comply with the new regulation could result in a £5000 fine.

What's changed?

As of October 1, 2015 all landlords (except registered social landlords) must:

Fit at least one smoke alarm on each floor of the property
Fit a carbon monoxide detector in rooms containing a solid fuel appliance
Check that the alarms are working at the start of every new tenancy.
